In 1915, the Count's widow and her slightly disabled eldest son Enrico lived in the castle of the Alberti family in Italy. Enrico seemed to have merged with the Austrians who occupied and ruled the land. His younger brother Franco was a talented pianist who held concerts across the country. He is also one of the leaders of the resistance fighters. Polish opera singer Elizabeth was his loyal collaborator and mistress. But during his visit to the castle, he fell in love with Anne, the niece and guardian of an Austrian lieutenant. Despite his brother's disapproval and jealousy, he still married her. Then he joined the army fighting against the Austrians.
